African Fabrics- Ghana

In Ghana, it seems every cloth has a story or it is a story portrayed through cloth.

Our group has many a story to tell as well of fossicking through markets and raiding fabric stashes.

Look at the face on this lovely guy in the smock market, he was surprised initially when one of our gang came by for a look, but she wandered off.

That market rarely sees a foreigner, you could tell by the discrete glances we got, and shy smiles….. anyway, we were leaving, and R seemed like she still wanted a smock so the whole gang said “show us”

She had the whole team to help and went through his stash again. Throughout the vendor just smiled and smiled and encouraged us. I bet we are still a story at his place.

Kente cloth weaves all have a name, there is much thought that goes into new designs and particular uses…

African Wax prints have a convoluted history and are beloved in West Africa.

@global_mamas is an inspiring story. Fair trade, women’s work and training. The co-ordinator Patience is always welcoming, showing us around. One of the gang spied the offcuts pile and asked if they could make us lucky dip bags. What a score! We had excited conversations after that, planning what we would all make.

Ghana plans 2024 are underway, having a lovely distraction going back through the events of 2023. Got a few need connections to squeeze in. 😀

Stay tuned.
