This journey is designed to nourish your creativity while offering you a true taste of Kerala at its finest.

On this retreat, you'll have the opportunity to paint every day under the expert guidance of Carolyn Gavin. While we travel through Kerala, South India, you'll also immerse yourself in the rich local culture and enjoy unforgettable sightseeing experiences.

  • Fort Kochi: Wander through the historic spice market, marvel at the iconic Chinese fishing nets, and take in the charm of the bustling harbor.
  • Kerala Backwaters: Experience the serenity of a peaceful day cruise through these tranquil waterways, and unwind at a resort set along the waterside, where you can paint and simply watch life unfold around you.
  • Seaside Escape: We'll end the retreat at a palm-fringed beach, where you'll enjoy breathtaking sunsets over the Arabian Sea, painting amidst the tranquil beauty of the coast.

  • Day 1 - Kochi (10 Jan)

    Arrival at Cochin International Airport, Kerala, India


    Airport pickup any time night or day. 


  • Day 2 - Kochi (11 Jan)

    Introductory walk around the Historic Fort Area in the morning

    Lots to see Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church- Oldest European Church, Fort Immanuel- Bastion of the Portuguese, The Dutch Cemetery and The Dutch Palace with its beautiful Kerala style murals.

    The smell of the spice market will stay with you as a memory- it adds a rich, sweet layer to the air.

    All close to our hotel.


    Afternoon with Carolyn- introduction and time to paint.


    Let's share a celebratory Welcome Dinner together this evening.

  • Day 3 - Kochi (12 Jan)

    Morning free to explore or work.


    Afternoon - paint with Carolyn.


    Evening visit to a Traditional Dance performance- we will arrive early to witness the application of their extraordinary make-up.

  • Day 4 - Munnar Hill Station (13 Jan)

    First we will visit the amazing Kerala Folklore Museum, one man's obsession turned into a brillaint museum.


    Then heading up into the cooler hills, where tea and spice plantations abound.

    We'll visit a tea plantation and then spend the afternoon at our resort and painting with Carolyn.

  • Day 5 - Munnar Hill Station (14 Jan)

    We are off to visit Aranya Naturals, an inspiring sheltered workshop that makes paper and specialises in natural dyes.


    Let's make out own indigo dyed papers to use theis afternoon at our resort.

  • Day 6 - Kerala Backwaters (15 Jan)

    We will wind our way down through the hills to the Kerala Backwaters - these peaceful lakes and canals is where Kerala gets the name "God's Own Country" peaceful and beautiful.


    Once we arrive at out lakeside resort it becomes a  swim, relax, paint type day.

  • Day 7 - Kerala Backwaters(16 Jan)

    Morning session by the Lakeside with Carolyn, 

    luch will be on a ricebaot as we cruise through the canals and palmlined lakes, bring your art materials it is the perfect painting location.

  • Day 8 - Kerala Backwaters (17 Jan)

    In the morning we will explore the local area, there is a stunning old Kerala style wodden temple close by, beautiful to visit and something you might enjoy apinting.


    A family run local restaurant is a well known favourite spot - we'll try it for lunch.

    Afternoon back at the lakeside to paint with Carolyn.

  • Day 9 - Kochi (18 Jan)

    Return to Kochi via a beach on the Arabian Sea, a spot with plam trees and fishing boats to visit.

    Arriving back at Fort Kochi you have an afternoon to finish work, and wrap up with Carolyn.

    Take a last walk down to the Chinese Fishing nets and local action before our Farewell Dinner.

    We will arrange individual drop to the airport for departures from

    SUGGESTED ART SUPPLY LIST

    These products are what I use and love. They are recommended and suggested for their high quality, colour intensity and versatility. 

    NOTE: you will need to put your supplies in a checked bag. You cannot bring art materials as carry-on.  


    BRUSHES

    Feel free to bring your favourite brushes with you. We will be mostly using round watercolour brushes and square bristle brushes. Big brushes are welcome too!

    Escoda brushes are my favourite with a lifetime of usage. - sizes 6,8,12 and 16. 

    The Prado travel set with 2,6 and 10 covers it, plus the 1530 ÚLTIMO SERIES size 16.

    PAINTS

    Please feel free to bring the colours that YOU like and don’t feel pressured to get all the paints. My favourite brands are Holbein for watercolour, acyla gouache and gouache. Kuretake as a flat travel set

    Favourite colours which can apply to all the mediums:

    • Opera Pink (luminous and regular) Acryla Gouache

    • Red and orange (luminous) Acryla Gouache

    • Horizon Blue

    • Brilliant Pink

    • Lemon Yellow

    • Permanent Yellow (or Aureolin) and Mustard yellow

    • Vermilion Red

    • Cadmium Red Orange and yellow orange

    • Ultramarine Blue or Violet Blue

    • Sky Blue or Horizon Blue

    • Burnt Umber and burnt Sienna

    • Emerald Green

    • Permanent Green

    • Titanium White

    • Lamp Black

    PAPER

    Size: 9x12, 11x14 inches or larger. Square or rectangular.

    I recommend Arches Cold Press 140LB or 300LB BLOCK for the best results.

    Other brands: Fabriano Artistico, Strathmore Cold Press or Saunders Waterford (St Cuthberts Mill) Sketchbook: I like the Handbook series by Speedball, size 8x10” I also love any hand made paper, like Kadhi or Lameli. 

    1 -2 Canvas boards or wood cradle panels 

    PALLET 

    Enamelled tray or the tear away paper ones are portable and the best.

    OTHER

    Please bring an ink dip pen and black India ink (make sure to bring an unopened small jar of ink!) pair of scissors
