To Do list- Ghana

Fiona • March 20, 2024

The TO DO list is huge....
and like that question "How do you reach the top of the mountain?"
[ vegetatarian version of the elephant question you note?]
One step at a time!
Questions from interested travellers helps me prioritise the items on the list.

Where do we get our hands dirty in Ghana? A few ideas I came up with on this last tour need to be adde
*We make 2 m of batik waxed and dyed cloth with Esther
*We visit Oklah who makes glass beads and he does a demonstration- we just don’t have enough time to fire beads and let them cool. That afternoon we visit Agnes to make bracelets with glass beads we collect.
*Shea butter you are encouraged to get your hands in the butter to whip it- really hard work but we can try our hand at each step.
*Indigo they generally dye yarn and weave- NEW I am going to bring some scarves with me, we can tie them as we travel and I will ask the guys to dip them for us 😊
I just checked and need to mention this on the website- I just found them at one of my weavers in India- they are beautifully finished and a way to play with indigo easily.

Brass beads again a hands on demonstration- try moulding wax etc but it takes too many days to complete the process.

I have a textile journal I am stitching using bits and pieces I’ve collected travelling- it is something I show and encourage guests in developing the idea for themselves.
I supply participants with a journal and a hand-out of ideas to use as they like during travels- some sketch and collect ephemera, some don’t
I find the Fante flags very stimulating for ideas for the journal- lots of proverbs stitched onto the flags. We hope to visit them again.
We did raid the scrap heap at Global Mamas last year and many of us went home and made a garment with the offcuts. See my dress :)
