Safdarjang

From the portrait he looks like a jolly fellow….

Apparently, appearances are misleading.

Safdarjang was the fabulously wealthy Nawab of Awadh [Kingdom at Lucknow] when the last of the Mughal Emperor’s invited him to be Prime Minister. Whilst the Emperor lost himself to booze, opium and women, the power hungry Safdarjang made himself so loathed that the Emperor had to invite the warriors of a neighbouring kingdom in to expel him.

Out the door in 1753 and dead in 1754. His son petitioned the Emperor to allow him to build a Tomb for his father. This was the last great Tomb built in the Mughal era, first for a non-Mughal Royal. The layout is in the same style as Humayan’s Tomb, the first of the fabulous Mughal Garden Tombs…. Taj Mahal is another in this design list.

It is beautiful and peaceful.  Plenty of benches scattered around to sit and contemplate the world or sit and sketch.

Leonie Norton will host a sketch morning here as part of our tour Travel Sketching- Jaipur in Feb 2024
