Travel Sketching in Türkiye with Rob Sketcherman 2025

CAS is excited to host a trip to Türkiye with Rob Sketcherman as your tutor.

Rob is a keen traveller, active in the Hong Kong Urban Sketcher’s group and will be presenting at the 12th Urban Sketchers International Symposium in Buenos Aires Oct 2024.

Rob’s work is expressive and vibrant, he will encourage you to develop your own style, make great travel journals and educate you in how to get the most out of your iPad as a drawing medium.

In his own words I am a Hong Kong artist who uses the iPad Pro as my exclusive medium of choice and am most known for my urban sketching works.

Through direct observation, I record life around me as it happens, whether it’s a building about to be demolished, or a festival in full swing. The immediacy of witnessing, distilling, processing and recording what I see gives my work life, and I love that the results are approachable and can be appreciated by anyone. It is both representational and metaphorical. See what you want in it.

Take a look at Rob’s website for more info on his work.

Join us for the opportunity to explore and record Istanbul, it’s wonderful streets and rich history and indulge in a jaunt to Cappadocia’s whimsical Fairy Chimneys with the option of an early morning balloon ride.

If you like to read, try Richard Fidler’s “Ghost Empire” a travelogue that takes you through Istanbul/Constantinople/ Byzantium’s long and complex history.

Anything by Orhan Pamuk will also enrich your appreciation of this ancient city.

Why Travel Sketch with iPad?

There is no gear or mess to clean up, refill to worry about, or concerns about accidentally leaving behind a favourite pen or tube of colour.

Working on iPad is also perfect for many museums that only allow dry drawing media.

You can expect to

– become proficient with using Procreate for drawing and painting on location

 – have time to absorb lessons and practice recommended workflows and techniques – explore ways to tackle different drawing subjects, from interesting artifacts to stunning architecture, quick people-drawing, for all levels of artistic ability

– learn how to assemble your artwork into spreads that tell the story of your travels

 – get personal feedback and help for your creative journey

– plus lots of iPad creativity and productivity tips from a full-time urban sketcher and iPad artist who’s been using his iPad to do everything including creating artwork for over 10 years!

Many people already have an iPad and Apple Pencil for email, web browsing, reading material and Netflix when traveling.

Procreate is a one-off purchase of USD9.99/AUD 15.00.

Investing the time to learn how to use this mobile digital studio will pay off in many ways down the road.

You like to work old school on paper?

You are welcome to join us- be aware Rob will spend time helping guests with technical side of the iPad.

Rob says “Rob has spent his last decade immersed in digital media, but still touches his analog roots with a brush pen now and then, especially when demonstrating a sketching principle in class. He’s happy to offer pointers for paper, but be aware that Rob will also be spending time helping guests with tech troubles and deciphering digital workflows.”
