One of my favourite places to experience is The Mezquita Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba.

It is a hodge podge of styles layered over, under and into each other- it is like walking through wonderland.

They have uncovered a roman mosaic under the floor near the entrance. There was apparently a Visigoth church here, and then when Cordoba became the capital of Al-Andalus in 785 a mosque was built here. A fantastical building of striped arches and fantastical beauty.

Cordoba was recaptured by Christian forces and later in the 1600s a Cathedral was plopped right in the middle of the Mosque, heavy dark wood, and lots of little chapels, full of skulls and Christian icons.

My favourite part is the striped arches and the part that really touches my heart is the polish on the pillars at hand height….. how many people over the last 1200+ years have walked in there with wonder in their heart gazing at that beauty?

I admit, I walk through each and every visit and add to the polish, running my hands over the bellies of those pillars; feeling a small part of its long history….

You are welcome to join us in adding to the polish on those pillars- we are venturing that way in May 2023.
